You’ve Got to Manage Your Career — No One Else Will

Members of my career mentoring site      will tell you that the biggest myth when it comes to career success is thinking that good performance is enough, or that your work will speak for itself.  Good performance is important, but it is just the price of admission to the career success sweepstakes.  You’ve got to actively manage your career — no one will do it for you.

This article provides some great advice on managing your career.

The six questions mentioned in the article…

  • Who in the organization should I have a good relationship with?
  • Who/what departments should I be working closely with?
  • Who impacts my professional reputation and the opportunities I have?
  • What skills do I have that the organization values most?
  • What contributions have I made that the organization values most?
  • What mistakes have I made from which I need to recover?

…are really important.  If you don’t know the answer to any one of them, take the time to find out.

You also need to develop your skills if you want to advance in your career.  Here is a list of the skills you need to master if you want to create the life and career success you deserve.

  • Communication Skills
    • Conversation
    • Writing
    • Presenting
  • Interpersonal Competence
    • Self Knowledge
    • Relationship Building
    • Teamwork
    • Conflict resolution

In addition to these skills you need to create positive personal impact.  By this I mean that you need to develop and nurture your unique personal brand; learn and use basic business etiquette, polish your appearance — in person and online.

Successful people actively manage their careers.  If you follow the advice in the article and develop the skills I’ve listed above, you’ll be on your way to creating the life and career success you want and deserve.
