You’ve Got To Be Willing To Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

I send daily success quotes to members of my career mentoring site.  Here is the quote for last Thursday…

“You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Christopher Columbus

That same day, one of my LinkedIn colleagues, Kristina Dipalo, posted this article…

http://dailyworklife.com/2015/05/15/flying-on-auto-pilot/

The quote and the article have the same message.  If you want to succeed in your life and career you have to be willing to take a few risks, get out of your comfort zone, learn and try something new.  I agree.  These days things are changing so rapidly that it’s impossible to stay in the same place.  If you’re not moving forward, you’re going backward.

Moving forward can be risky and frightening, but it’s necessary if you’re going to create the life and career success you want and deserve.  As Kristina says, “So it is with any period where you rest a little too long in one place. You think you’re merely catching your breath — until your brief pause dances dangerously close to a way of life.  At that moment, you know it’s time to reach over and switch off the auto-pilot. Time to drive forward once again.”

Salvatore Maddi is a Professor of Psychology and Social Ecology at the University of California Irvine.  He is an advocate of what he calls “hardiness “– a combination of three factors: commitment, control and challenge.  He says that these three factors lead to success.  I buy his argument.  Commitment to what you choose to do, willingness to take control of your life — to get off of auto pilot and welcoming the challenges that come with stretching yourself will lead to success in the long run.

The common sense point here is simple.  If you want to succeed, you need to do three things.  Commit to a course of action.  Take control of your life.  See challenges as opportunities.

Your career mentor,

Bud
