It’s Important to Care About What You Do

Tweet 100 in my career advice book Success Tweets says, “Care about what you do.  If you care a little, you’ll be an OK performer.  If you care a lot, you’ll become an outstanding performer.”

Over the weekend, I met a young woman who cares a lot about what she does.  Vy Pham is a student at the University of Denver.  She also works in the University Technology Services department.

Last week, I had a major hard drive malfunction on my computer, I had to contact the IT Support.  It was so bad that I ended up buying a new machine.  I was setting it up over the weekend and ran into a problem syncing all of my email accounts with Outlook.  I called UTS and spoke with Vy.  She was very patient and worked through the problem with me.

When we were finished, I told her that I wanted to change m first name on my DU email account from LeRoy (I’m still mad at my parents for that name) to Bud.  Vy told me that I needed to first change my preferred name in the DU system and then send an email asking to have my email account name changed.  I did that and sent her an email telling her I did so.

Now comes the part about how much Vy cares about doing her job and doing it well…

This morning she sent me this email…

Hi Bud,

So I was checking our ticket system for your ticket to make sure it went through, and I didn’t find anything. I talked to my supervisor and it looks like our system is actually broken right now.  So just give us a call and we can put in a ticket for you.

Thanks!

Vy

I called her and she created the ticket manually.

The important point here is that Vy cares.  She didn’t have to check for my support ticket.  She didn’t have to contact me telling me that the system is broken.  She didn’t have to manually create a support ticket.   But she did all three.  And I’m on the way to getting my email addresses changed.

The point of all this is that little things matter.  When you care enough to take care of the little things, the big things like career success will start to fall into place.

Be like Vy.  Care a lot about what you do.  And you’ll be on the road to the life and career success you want and deserve.

Your career mentor,

Bud
