Five Phrases That Will Help You Become More Influential

It’s not secret, I tell members of my career mentoring site all the time — if you want to create the life and career success you deserve, you need to become a person of influence.  That’s why I really like this article…

https://www.themuse.com/advice/5-phrases-thatll-automatically-make-you-a-better-leader-and-earn-you-all-the-respect?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5%20Phrases%20That%27ll%20Automatically%20Make%20You%20a%20Better%20Leader%20%28and%20Earn%20You%20All%20the%20Respect%29&utm_term=Daily%20Email%20List

The very first phrase — this is important, let me write it down — is one I’ve used for years.  It works in the b2b world as well as the b2c world.  It has helped me build a million dollar consulting practice in which I’ve worked with many Fortune 100 companies, and a thriving coaching business in which I work with individuals.

Everybody likes to feel important.  Listening to what others have to say is one of the best ways to help people think they are important.  Making a note of things that are important to other people is a great way to show them they you value what they are saying and that you recognize its importance to them.

I have never heard someone say, “Nah, it’s not that important, you don’t need to write it down.”  When I’m with somebody, I can tell by their body language that they appreciate me stopping the conversation for a minute to make a note.  Over the phone, people usually say, “Sure, take as much time as you want.  This is important.  Glad you think so too.”

I tell members of my career site that listening is an important career success skill.  Responding appropriately is as important as listening.  Telling someone that you want to make a note of what he or she is saying is a very appropriate response.  It shows that you have recognized the importance of what is being said.  It also shows that you are taking it seriously.

All of this helps you become a more influential person — the guy or gal to whom people turn when they have a question, need some help or want some advice.  All five of the phrases in the article are great for building your influence, but the first one — this is important, let me make a note of it — has worked the best for me.  Try it, you’ll see what I mean.

Your career mentor,

Bud
