Common Sense Advice You Know — but Might Not Always Follow

Last week I did a post in which I featured an article by Gina DeLapa.  Today, I’d like to do a quick review of her entertaining and useful book Stuff You Already Know* and Everybody Should.

Stuff You Already Know* and Everybody Should is a great book – it’s right up my alley. A disclaimer here, this is coming from a guy who wrote a book called Success Tweets – a book of 140 tweets on life and career success.  I like things to be clear and uncomplicated.

Gina DeLapa, the author of Stuff You Already Know crammed 437 bits of common sense life and career success advice into her book. In Hamlet, Polonius says “Brevity is the soul of wit.” Gina has provided a lot of witty advice as well as some pretty practical stuff.

First the witty…

  • “Never give your wife a gift from the drugstore – or the airport.
  • “If you don’t like someone, don’t go camping with them.”
  • “Trust your friend’s directions more than your GPS.”
  • “Never ask a woman if she’s colored her hair.”
  • “Never fry bacon in the nude.”

Now for the practical stuff…

  • “Follow up and follow through. Do this consistently and you’ll stand out from the crowd.”
  • “Don’t go to your boss with a problem until you’ve already thought of a solution.”
  • “Give a damn. Let your words and actions show you care.”
  • “When things go wrong, always be willing to acknowledge your role.”
  • “The best revenge isn’t living well. It’s being good: good at heart, good at what you do, good to everyone you meet.”

I picked out these quotes by randomly flipping through the pages. That’s how good this book is. I’m sure you probably said, “I already know that” as you read the quotes above – and that’s the point of the book. You probably did know all of this stuff – but I bet you don’t always practice it.

That’s why Stuff You Already Know is so powerful. You can pick it up at random and get positive reminders about how to live a successful life.

Get this book and keep it handy. You’ll be glad you did.
